Large Format... here I come :)

I have been thinking long and hard on whether to dip my toes into large format photography and in particular 4x5. I spent weeks reading, researching and stressing... Shall I? Shan't I?

Well the result was, I now own a Graflex Speed Graphic 4x5 :) So, Why a Speed Graphic? Many reasons, but the biggest reason for me personally was the focal plane shutter.

With a focal plane shutter, I can use all manner of vintage brass lenses, projection lenses or even binocular optics.

At the moment the camera is fitted with a Kodak Ektar 127mm f/4.5 with a built in shutter, but I plan on making some lens boards and I have a few vintage lenses to play with already! Two in particular I am excited to try is Leitz Wetzlar Elmaron 150mm f2.8 and a Kershaw Kalee 114mm f1.9, both these are projector lenses. Now f/1.9 and f/2.8 on 4x5 are very shallow depth of field and the equivalent on 35mm I have read is something like f/0.6! Look out swirly bokeh on the way...

I have a lot of work to do, in means of getting used to the camera and its slow paced photography, making and mounting the lenses and generally getting my head around it all!

The plan is to shoot 120 roll film firstly, to get used to it all then moving up to 4x5, so watch this space :)
